BACKGROUND OF THE LABORATORY: Biofertilizer Laboratory at Medziphema is one of the most important producer of biofertilizers in the state under the Department of Agriculture. It is located at Medziphema town in the foothill of Pauna Range in the District of Dimapur,Nagaland.It is a small developing town in between Dimapur and Kohima on National Highway No.29, about 30 kms from Dimapur(the commercial Hub of the state,which is well connected with Road,Rail and Airways).It is 45 kms from Kohima,the Capital City of Nagaland.The Laboratory is 3 km away from the small township of Medziphema,having an altitidute of 305metre above sea level. Biofertilizer Laboratory was initiated during the year 1999 – 2000 and then it was properly established in the month of January 2002 with a capacity to produce 20 to 25 metric tonnes of different types of biofertilizers annually to supplement the use of chemical fertilizers considerably.

Aims and Objectives of the Laboratory:

     Realization of the adverse effect caused by using excessive or imbalanced and continuous use of chemical fertilizers and other synthetic agricultural inputs that which leads to depletion or degradation of soil fertility status, environmental pollution, human health hazards at the same time destruction of natural ecosystem. The Department of Agriculture felt the need to promote Integrated Plant Nutrient Systems (IPNS) for sustainable agriculture where biofertilizer is one of the major components adding to mineral fertilizers and manures. Biofertilizer Laboratory was therefore set up with a view to produce different types of biofertilizers required in the field of agriculture for increasing crop production level, to improve soil fertility status, to minimize human health hazards problem, to minimize the use of chemical fertilizers at least by 25%, to provide support to have meaningful organic farming /organic agriculture and to minimize environmental pollution at the same time to conserve natural eco-system in an eco-friendly way.

Biofertilizer:-

      The term “Biofertilizer” is made up of two words, ‘Bio’ means living and ‘fertilizer’ means a product which provides nutrients in usable form. Biofertilizers are carrier based preparation containing live or latent cells of effective strains of bacteria or fungi or algae, alone or in combination which on application to seeds, seedlings and in soils, they helps in fixing or solublizing the nutrients present in air or in the soil which is then made available to the plants.

Different types of biofertilizers produced in the laboratory are:

1. RHIZOBIUM:- It is Nitrogen fixer. It is use for legume crops like pulses and

Oilseed crop like soyabeans and groundnut.Rhizobium biofertilizer is crop specific.

2. AZOTOBACTER:-It is use for cereal crops, vegetable crops, oilseed crops,

Plantation crops, fruit crops and flowers.

3. AZOSPIRILLUM:- It is use for cereal crops, vegetables, fruit crops, plantation

crops, flowers etc.

4. PHOSPHOTIKA:- It is known as phosphate solublizing micro-organism (PSM).

It is use in all the crops along with nitrogenous biofertilizers like Rhizobium, Azotobacter, Azospirillum and Acetobacter with same ratio.

Production Programme:-

Production of Biofertilizers is a continuous process in the laboratory and ever since its inception in January 2002, the Biofertilizer Laboratory has already produced 183.8 Metric Tonnes of different types of biofertilizers for various agricultural crops to meet the requirement of the department for various schemes for demonstrations and other research programmes till June 2017. The Laboratory is producing 13 (thirteen) Metric Tons on an average every year since January 2002.

Distribution System of Biofertilizers at Present:

The final product of different types of biofertilizers are transported to S.D.O (store) Dimapur by Departmental truck for distribution to all the Districts and Sub-divisions along with Kharif seeds and Rabi seeds every year. As of now Biofertilizers are distributed by the concern department at free of cost to the needy farmers for effective utilization and proper implementation of various departmental schemes, demonstrations, research and training pogrammes in different Districts and Sub-Divisions within our state.

DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM OF BIOFERTILIZER AT PRESENT:

  • The final products of different biofertilizers are transported to Dimapur Store.

  • Biofertilizers are then distributed to different districts and Sub-divisions along with seeds during Kharif season and Rabi season respectively.

  • Biofertilizers are distributed to the farmers at free of cost for proper implementation of departmental schemes, for demonstrations, Researches and training Programmes in different districts and sub-divisions in the state.
